THE MERCK-FROSST AWARD IN PHARMACOLOGY
LE PRIX-MERCK FROSST DE PHARMACOLOGIE

The Merck-Frosst Canada Company supports this Award to the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. The Award consists of $2,000 and a medal. Its purpose is to recognize and to stimulate basic research in pharmacology and experimental therapeutics by investigators at the beginning of their independent research career. Nominees shall not have been more than twelve years after their last earned degree in a related subject on December 31st of the year of the Award.

The Award shall be made for work done primarily in Canada by a Canadian scientist. There are no restrictions on the institutional affiliation of a candidate and membership in the Canadian Society of Pharmacology and Therapeutics is not a prerequisite for nomination.

Nominations shall be accompanied by:

  1. Six copies of a 2-page summary which describes the nominee's work.
  2. Six copies of each of five published papers (or manuscripts accepted for publication) considered by the sponsors to be the nominee's most significant work.
  3. Six copies of the nominee's curriculum vitae, list of publications and a brief biographical sketch suitable for press release.

All nominees who were unsuccessful in any given year may be renominated in the subsequent year, providing they still meet the time limitations of their independent research career. In this event, an updated application must be submitted by the nominees.

Nominations for the Award shall be made by any two members of the society, but no member shall nominate more than one candidate. Nominations shall be sent to the Chair of the Merck Frosst Award Committee by a date specified by the Society. The recipient shall be chosen by the Awards Committee consisting of five members. In addition to the Chair of the Committee who shall be the President of the Society, this Committee shall consist of four members of the Society elected by mail ballot for a term of two years.

The decision of the Committee shall be based on originality of approach, independence of thought, novelty, clarity and excellence. The nominee shall not be judged in comparison with more mature and experienced researchers. Quality, rather than number of contributions, shall be emphasized.

The decision of the Committee is final. Although the Award is to be made annually, there will be no obligation to make the award when, in the opinion of the Committee, there is no qualified nominee.

Formal presentation of the Award and Medal shall be made to the recipient at the time of the Merck Frosst Award Oration during the Annual Meeting of the Society.
