WELCOME MESSAGE

Dear Colleagues and trainees,

On behalf of the Canadian Society for Pharmacology and Therapeutics, it is our great pleasure to invite you to join us for the 2025 Annual Meeting, set to take place from June 2nd to 5th in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia. This promises to be an extraordinary event where science, innovation, and collaboration converge in one of Canada’s most stunning cities.

This year’s theme is “From the Sea to the Sky: Unlocking the mysteries of drug action”. The program is thoughtfully designed to provide a wealth of opportunities for learning, networking, and inspiration, beginning with an industry workshop tailored specifically for students and trainees.

Over the course of the three main days of the conference, attendees will have the opportunity to explore ground-breaking, unpublished research presented by leading experts from Canada and around the world. The program will feature state-of-the-art symposia, a showcase of top-rated trainee abstracts, and invaluable opportunities to engage in discussions that will influence the future of pharmacology education.

Vancouver, the host city, provides an exceptional backdrop for this event. Located between the ocean and the mountains, it offers stunning harbor views, renowned dining experiences, and remarkable waterfront walks, ensuring an unforgettable visit for all participants.

Three exciting Plenary Speakers have been confirmed :

Terrance Snutch, PhD

GETTING TO MEETING VENUE/HOTEL

From the Airport

  • Public Transit (33 mins - $4.65 contactless payment, or $3.85 with a compass card): Hop on the Canada Line Skytrain bound for Waterfront at the airport, ride until the Vancouver City Centre stop, walk about 8min to the Sutton Place Hotel.
  • Uber or Taxi (~30 mins, ~$35): Taxis and rideshare pickup can be found at international and domestic arrivals level 2.

Getting around the city

  • The public transit system in Vancouver is easy to use and can get you most places in the greater Vancouver area. Contactless payment is used on all buses and trains, so you can simply tap your credit card to get on, although purchasing a compass card at the transit stations provides a slightly better rate.
  • For BC residents, Evo and Modo are car sharing services that allow you to pick up and drop off a car anywhere in the city.
  • Rogers Mobi bikes are everywhere around the city and can be easily used by downloading the Mobi app.
  • Uber, Lyft, and taxis are always available and easy to use all around Vancouver.

WHAT TO DO IN VANCOUVER

Whether you are in the mood for hilly hikes, delicious dining, or an hour of art appreciation, Vancouver has you covered. If you are new to the city, make sure to save some time for enjoying some of the sights, noises, smells and flavours that this place has to offer. This guide features 7 activities, plus transit or walking directions for specific locations worth visiting.

1. From the Sea: the Vancouver Aquarium, Stanley Park, and the Seawall:

  • The Vancouver Aquarium houses an impressive assortment of fish and aquatic mammals, as well as less-common sights in an aquarium such as monkeys, sloths, and amphibians. The Aquarium is located in the middle of Stanley Park.
  • Stanley Park is a large urban park on the northern end of Downtown. It has a dense network of trails and minimal elevation gain. There is a cannon on the eastern side of the park that fires every night at 9PM. Don’t worry - there is no need to call the police. Walk ~30 minutes northwards through Downtown to Stanley Park. Or take the bus: 250, 257, 240, 246, all departing from Burrard and Georgia, 5 blocks northeast of the Sutton Place Hotel, get off at Denman St, and walk northwards into Stanley Park.
  • The Seawall is a paved trail circumnavigating downtown Vancouver. It passes north from False Creek & Granville Island to English Bay Beach, around Stanley Park, ending at the Vancouver Convention Centre. Walk west, north, or south from the Sutton Place Hotel. Eventually you will reach the seawall.

2. To the Sky: Hikes Across the North Shore, Burnaby Mountain, and Coquitlam:
  • AllTrails provides mostly accurate information on difficulty and length of hikes throughout Metro Vancouver. Many of these trails can be reached by bus. Google Maps and Apple Maps both provide comprehensive public transit directions for reaching these.
  • If you enjoy the feeling of your quads and hamstrings burning for the next week, check out the Grouse Grind: you can hike up Grouse Mountain, beneath the Grouse Gondola, to reach the restaurant hosting the Pharmacology Dinner.

3. For the Kids: Science World: Science World hosts an array of exhibits and events geared towards making science and engineering entertaining to children (as well as adults). Take the Expo Line (eastbound) from Burrard Station (to the east of the hotel) to Main St.-Science World. Science World is the geodesic dome structure to the west.

4. For the Artsy: Vancouver Art Gallery and Bill Reid Gallery:

  • The Vancouver Art Gallery hosts rotating exhibits (which can be found on their website: vanartgallery.bc.ca), as well as a permanent exhibit dedicated to showcasing the work of Emily Carr. From the hotel, walk northeast on Burrard, take a left on Robson. The gallery will be on your left.
  • The Bill Reid Gallery hosts art by the eponymous Haida artist, as well as rotating contemporary indigenous artworks. A list of exhibits can be found at billreidgallery.ca. Walk northeast on Burrard. Take a right on Georgia and a left on Hornby. The gallery will be on your left.

5.  For the Studious: UBC and SFU: UBC and SFU are both wonderful campuses within transit distance of the hotel. UBC is home to the Beatty Biodiversity Museum and the Museum of Anthropology, while SFU hosts an Archaeology Museum. To reach UBC, take the westbound #14 or #4 bus departing from Granville, or the #44 departing from Burrard. To reach SFU, take the R5 eastbound departing from Burrard and Pender.

6.  For the Hungry: Food: Good eats can be found throughout Vancouver. Robson, Davie, and Denman Streets are excellent places to find a meal you’ll enjoy.

  • For the gourmand: Vancouver’s fast-food-favorites are a late-night Donair or shawarma, fried chicken, or a Breka pastry.
  • For the gourmet: check out the Michelin guide: guide.michelin.com. You may be surprised to find some reasonably priced Michelin-starred restaurants in Vancouver.
